Originating from timbers reclaimed around the West Coast, our reclaimed Redwood mantels are some of the finest tight grain material we’ve ever seen. Old-growth Redwood beams simply do not compare to what is sold today in new lumber. Our reclaimed Redwood is supplied as all heartwood and virtually free of knots. Fireplace mantels are available in a wide range of sizes from 4”x4” up to 12”x14” and lengths up to 8’. Longer lengths are not a problem at an additional cost. The original color is a rich, reddish brown patina with the original texture containing either a circular sawn, band sawn, or old surfaced appearance which we often sand or grind to create a timeworn appearance or distress the mantel for a hand hewn appearance. We are also able to mill the beams to exact sizes and perfectly straight by sawing the original faces off revealing raw wood. For fireplace mantels, we detail sand all exposed sides and cut one side flat for installation against a wall or ceiling. Mantel ends are cut square to the requested length and polished. Matching corbels in a variety of sizes and shapes are available upon request as well.
Sanded Redwood mantels start with a rough sawn brown or gray timber which is then cut to length and lightly sanded reducing the splinters but retaining the original reddish brown patina characteristic of aged redwood. The surface may have some degree of character marks which result from the nails and bolts we remove and checking resulting from air drying. Custom corbels can be cut to go along with the mantel as well.
Using broad axes, adz axes, draw knives, and sanders we create an authentic hand hewn appearance on reclaimed old growth Redwood beams. The mantels can be sawn to exact dimensions prior to hand hewing and custom corbels can be cut to go along with the mantel as well.
A fresh sawn appearance is created by putting a reclaimed redwood timber on our horizontal band saw and removing the original face on all four sides. We can create a perfectly straight piece and cut to exact requested dimensions. Bolt holes can be plugged prior to sawing to minimize the character marks. The sawn appearance works well with contemporary architecture. Custom corbels can be cut to go along with the mantel as well.
A surfaced appearance free of original mill marks and scarring is achieved by resawing and sanding the reclaimed Redwood mantel smooth. These mantels can be ordered to exact dimensions and custom corbels can be cut to go along with the mantel as well.
