Reclaimed Wood Box Beams

Built for decorative purposes or to conceal existing framing

Hollow timbers built with authentic reclaimed wood

Our box beams are fabricated using full-length, full-width, solid reclaimed wood whenever possible—creating a look that is virtually indistinguishable from an authentic solid timber.

Hollow beams fabricated from authentic antique lumber, and offering the look and character of solid timbers in a lighter, more versatile form. Built to order in customer-specified widths, heights, and lengths, these beams are commonly used for exposed ceiling applications, decorative beam layouts, or used to wrap and conceal existing framing. Each box beam we make is crafted from solid reclaimed wood and they can be produced in a range of surface options, including hand-hewn, rough-sawn, and antique smooth textures with naturally aged patinas—or fully re-milled for a cleaner, more refined appearance. Ideal for both residential and commercial projects, our box beams provide a practical solution where weight, installation constraints, or design flexibility are a factor—without sacrificing the authenticity and visual impact of true reclaimed timber.

Created to wrap existing framing or save weight

Virtually indistinguishable from solid timbers, our custom fabricated box beams are a great choice for customers looking to wrap existing framing or want the look of solid timbers without the weight. Due to the labor and waste involved in manufacturing, box beams are typically more expensive than solid beams. They are typically the best option for applications that require the wrapping of exposed structural elements such as glu-lams, steel I-beams, and steel columns. They can also be used as an alternative to solid beams in applications precluding the use of the heavier solid beams.
We can fabricate them to match the appearance of any of our solid beams or planking options. Although we have made box beams in a continuous run over 40′ long and 24″ tall, there are situations where the material is not available in the requested height or lengths requested.

The Vintage Difference

Not All Box Beams Are Created Equal…

Many box beams offered elsewhere are constructed using pieced-together short and narrow boards, or built with new lumber, veneers, or synthetic materials. These methods can result in more visible seams or shorter runs, differing from the appearance of true, solid long-length timbers. In these cases, added design elements such as metal strapping are used to address transitions or conceal joints; however, the overall effect can fall short for projects seeking a high-end, cohesive, and authentic result. At Vintage Timberworks, we pride ourselves in providing the most realistic looking faux beams that offer full-length spans and mimic the look of solid timber when using whole, solid timber is not an option.

Our approach to fabricating box beams is to produce the most realistic and authentic looking set of material that is virtually indistinguishable from solid antique timber. When details matter this approach is paramount.
