RECLAIMED WOOD WITH A HAND APPLIED RUSTIC TEXTURE
Hand Hewn Douglas Fir Solid Beams
Starting with our reclaimed Douglas fir timbers, our skilled crew uses traditional adzing techniques to hand-distress or “hand hew” the beam’s exposed sides. This process exposes fresh wood beneath the surface, resulting in a consistent hand-hewn appearance with the inherent character to expect from reclaimed wood. Being a reclaimed material means it will contain character marks like nail holes and seasoning checking while also be old-growth wood that is dry, dense, and stable.
With a substantial inventory to draw from, this material can be produced in a wide range of sizes—from 6×6 up to large-scale timbers—and lengths exceeding 40 feet, making it a reliable option for both small sets and high-volume projects requiring consistency across multiple beams with structural grading available upon request.
Because the outer patina is removed during the hand-hewing process, beams are typically stained or finished on site. The tinted wax we carry is a popular option for enhancing depth and tone and is featured in many of the gallery images of installations below. These timbers can be supplied as solid beams or fabricated into custom box beams for an additional cost.
